OnePlus 5 (photo: https://oneplus.net)

After four years with Nexus 5, I have decided to change the phone. Reason – as you can expected -very poor battery life, lack of security patches and the phone becomes quite slow and unresponsive.
Price budget for new phone was set to 350-450 EUR and I have read many reviews and tests. At the end, I take a credit card from my wallet and order OnePlus 5. Listed price is 499 EUR, but you can get it for 450 EUR (Student price) or even for 400 EUR in unofficial stores. OnePlus 5 is often called “flagship killer”, because it brings very good characteristics for lower price than competitors.
To be short, I won’t compare it with other phones and write a review, but just want to write down some Pros and Cons.

Pros:

  • Great value, but not as cheap as previous models
  • Premium design and feel
  • Phenomenal, silky smooth performance
  • High-end, metal build
  • Dual cameras
  • Vibrant AMOLED display
  • Dash Charge is fast and convenient
  • Quick fingerprint sensor
  • Long-lasting battery life
  • Clean OxygenOS without bloatware
  • Premium hardware (Snapdragon 835)
  • Dual SIM support
  • Unlocking bootloader and rooting don’t void the warranty
  • Very good and fast support from OnePlus
  • Cons:

  • Pricier than previous phones from OnePlus
  • Lacks water resistance
  • Lacks wireless charging
  • Tiny notification light
  • No expandable (microSD) storage
  • Slippery body
  • Hardware buttons can be pressed by mistake when taking phone from pocket
  • (Rare) occasional Wi-Fi and LTE drop of speed
  • Expensive additional parts (charger, case)
  • Some users have Jelly belly (example: sliding within menus)
  • Google Assistant works on OnePlus 5 with OxygenOS

Modern phones have really many features and different behaviors. With this in mind, the user usually can’t know who is responsible for small (or big) issues. It can be a hardware manufacturer, basic OS developer, custom ROM developer, author of installed applications…
But OxygenOS – clean build of Android – is stable, fast and without many bugs. Until now, I can confirm only one – some of the birthdays from Contacts aren’t shown in Calendar (I use Exchange for Contacts, Calendar, Emails). OnePlus 5 is a great combination – fast hardware and well-optimized software.

    Should you buy it?
If you are looking for phone in price range until 500 EUR, OnePlus should be probably the first choice. It has quite a bit of convincing features and specifications and only a few noteworthy drawbacks.
And don’t forget – you can get $20 off accessories with this referral link when buying OnePlus 5.
